Girls 'should look up to independent women'
Alison Morris, editor of the My Daughter website, which aims to provide tips on bringing up girls, said that it is important for girls to have goals to work towards.
With many female role-models appearing to be where they are purely because of their looks, many young girls can develop the misguided impression that their physical appearance is what matters most, said Ms Morris.
Parents can do a lot to alter this impression, she said.
Ms Morris advised: "Make sure that she knows you love her for who she is not for some mythical being who she thinks she wants to be. It is her as a person, as a real human being that is important, not what she looks like."
She added: "Their long term happiness is more likely if they actually aim for something that they work towards and gain by their own efforts."
