Minister says 'no excuse for failing'

Schools Secretary Ed Balls has told head teachers that there is no excuse for poor exam results.

As the latest league tables are published, Mr Balls declared that teachers must not take a hopeless attitude towards their pupils.

He said that poverty, social background and a school's area should not be used as excuses for poor results.

"If heads say, 'It can't be done, leave us alone, this is the best kids can do', that attitude is totally unacceptable and if it requires change we can step in," said Mr Balls.

"Anybody who says, 'Kids from round here can't succeed' is badly letting down local children and their community."

On a positive note, Mr Balls said that he was confident education was improving.

He said the tables showed that the number of schools failing to reach the key target of 30 per cent of their pupils achieving at least five GCSEs at grades A to C, including English and maths, had fallen from the previous year and that this was a good sign.

Balls also highlighted the fact that the results gap between schools in the poorest and richest areas had narrowed.
